Hi, I’m Lara Canham.

I’m a Colorado native with a lifelong passion for sports and the outdoors. My parents always encouraged me to “try everything”, which became the foundation for my interest in the movement of the body, particularly during sport.

I began skiing at the age of 2 and ran my first Bolder Boulder when I was 5. From there I dabbled in everything from figure skating, tennis, soccer, volleyball, and more. My athletic career was put on hold for a short period following a dodgeball related ACL tear and subsequent surgery, but returned just in time for intramural flag-football and broomball in college. As an adult I have most enjoyed biking, hiking, rock climbing, and skiing.

My hobbies also include traveling with my husband, spending time with friends/family/my Samoyed named “Cima” (means “summit” in Italian), tasting new ciders, and painting.

More about my background

My Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) is from the University of Colorado (CU) and my undergrad degree is from Notre Dame (go Irish!). With a strong interest in teaching and academia, I am also a faculty member of the CU PT Program on the Anschutz Medical Campus. My main teaching responsibilities since 2015 have included coordinating the movement science/biomechanics laboratories and courses focused on professional topics. I most enjoy teaching the DPT students about running mechanics, content that I’ve taught for the past several years.

I am certified in Functional Dry Needling, am a board certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS), and regularly take continuing education courses.

Dream it

Though running hasn’t been my main athletic focus in recent years, the science of running has long been my professional passion. I have extensively studied the running gait cycle and demands of the sport through continuing education specific to treating the running athlete, and have sub-specialized in the treatment of runners since 2016.

Build it

Dedicated to the highest level of physical therapy practice, I opened the Colorado Athlete to better serve my community. I wanted to spend more time with my patients/athletes to really become part of their healthcare and performance team.
